Pros

The pay and benefits are good for the area. The work that I did was relatively simple. Coworkers are friendly. Free coffee. Clean work environment.

Cons

I was employed by Charter College for a year and a half. Although most would consider this a brief amount of time, at Charter, a company with an incredibly high turnover, it is a period akin to being a senior employee. Caution to current and future employees to not get too secure in their roles. Most walk into work worried that it is their last day. It’s difficult being “Susie Sunshine” coming to work each day under these circumstances, but those who do not fall in line with a smile are asked to leave. This is not a career for rebels. Positions are easily added/dissolved without much thought. When my position was dissolved, the CEO invited us into a meeting room and explained that he came to the decision while lounging out on a beach. Literally. He let us know that we were recruited into another role that day or, if we refused to accept, we were to leave. Business is not personal but it does require tact, which the CEO unfortunately lacks. He touts his drug related youthful indiscretions at company meetings, openly discriminates younger employees* and encourages a sycophantic work culture. The new position was offered with the promise of training, coaching, and higher pay. Despite reservations, a job is better than no job. I held the role for less than a month and was asked to leave during the first week of formal training for “not being a good fit.” With no workflow and limited understanding of how to manage my time, I was already one foot out of the door. This situation is not new to Charter. Every end of the Quarter brings more layoffs, more hack plans to improve retention. During my employment with Charter, my job description went through 2 revisions and 1 title change. By April, 20+ employees had been laid off. After this particular layoff session, the CEO stated that would be the last major layoff planned for the year of 2016. He should run for president with that kind of candor. Upper management handles bleeding expenditures like amateurs, recklessly throwing new protocols and teams at problems that should be fixed at the system level. Watch out for the end of August! Consideration for the students is minimal. They are treated like numbers. *HR- When your CEO openly states that “millennials lack work ethic” and “no skirt can be too short” at company-wide meetings, and there is no reprimanding you do not build the rapport of a safe, reliable place for employees to bring their concerns regarding ageism, racism, sexism and sexual harassment. You do quite the opposite, actually.

As you report, you were terminated, so I understand you are bitter and angry. It is a natural human response, as is blaming others for your failures, rather than taking personal responsibility. But it does not excuse you for twisting the facts as you have throughout your post. For example, I tout my “drug related youthful discretions” as part of a personal story about education changing my life forever and saving me from a life of drug abuse. A story in which one my best friends dies of an overdose. A story I tell in teaching new employees about the powerful positive impact education can have and the importance of the work that we do. But you left that out. Shame on you and shame on anyone that believes anything you have written. Posted on behalf of Michael Dawson/CEO.

Integrity and Ethics

Pros

You don't just work at Charter College alone. You become a family with your department that does not stop once no longer employed with this company. The coworkers are the best part. I should mention that the relationships with the students are great as well.

Cons

Watching the dreams of students wash out to see by the tsunami that is Charter College and knowing that a student has no chance of ever becoming what they came to school for. Having to scrub the unethical feeling off after a hard day of work.

What kind of person who is so concerned with integrity stays with the company you describe for five years? A person of integrity would have left early on. It is more likely you were very happy until we moved your job to Salt Lake City. We get that you are bitter about that, but that does not excuse your saying things that are simply untrue. For example, your 5th grade education claim. All students are required to be a high school graduate or have a GED to be admitted to the college. What is true is that over 90% of employees surveyed at the end of 2015 would recommend a friend to work for the company. We think that speaks for itself just as our 100% NCLEX pass rate and our graduate placement rates speak for themselves. Posted on behalf of Michael Dawson.

Pros

The campus leadership at the local level was incredible. The admissions team was the best in the company as well as an incredible family to work with. Management allowed us to make the right decisions for our potential students. The pay was good for the last year that I was there.

Cons

The upper management is tyrannical and insulting to their employees. Unrealistic expectations and emotionally fueled and aggressive attacks upon the character of their employees seems to be the way that they choose to operate. I used to be a huge advocate of the CEO until I discovered the nature of his bureaucratic iron fist. Though I consider myself an incredibly intuitive individual, I had no idea that he chose to smile in your face and defame behind your back. All promotions were politically based, zero came from skill. In fact, many of the promotions from one campus in particular were in the interest of defusing a scandal. All of the people promoted were female. Management operates in a completely dismissive manner. A year ago, they cut the pay for admissions representatives by way of an email (we weren't important enough for a meeting...). This pay cut was so catastrophic that the most tenured member of our team lost $30,000 annually and had 2 weeks to prepare for such a catastrophic pay cut. Not even a month later during a quarterly meeting, the former CEO bragged that his average annual bar tab was more than the meager salary that he had just cut his admissions reps to. Over the course of my 3 years at the Vancouver campus I watched 43 people either be fired or quit (predominantly fired). The campus is practically a rotating door.
