Pros

Fair time off negotiations, overtime usually available, get to go on vacations with individuals, and engage in activities with them on a daily-weekly basis, teamwork environment with coworkers, management is supportive of staff and individuals’ needs, vacation/personal time is included for full time staff (35+ hours), personal time is included for part-time staff. We encourage a family meal setting, so staff get to enjoy a free meal on their shift with the individuals if they so choose. Paid first aid, Med Administration, and restraint trainings. Performance reviews every 3, 6, 9, or 12 months for staff and managers. Individuals are encouraged to participate in these reviews, on paper, if possible as to how they enjoy working with each staff,

Cons

Limited vacation floaters/relief staff to cover shifts. You deal with negative behaviors from individuals supported, such as yelling, biting, SIB, hitting, scratching, grabbing, hitting, etc depending on the individual’s diagnoses. You may need to do tasks of daily living for individuals some times; i.e. showering, changing diapers, help with feeding, etc which is not everyone’s cup of tea. Staff burn out is possible but they try to offer a good work/life balance to their staff.
