Cons
-Turn-over rate for employees are astronomically high. from high workload/low compensation, management tensions, lack of proper leadership/training, low membership report, manager tendency to replace disgruntled employees with new employees to keep paying minimum wages. this reduces team work, employee effectiveness and health, member accountability with disappearing staff, pt/membership sales and increases employee toxicity. For instance, the reason given my management for not having an employee biography wall is that "this would bring unwanted attention to frequent staff changes". literally meaning that they don't want clients to notice how often of staff is laid off and new are hired. -management are profit only driven, yet hide behind "saving lives" mentality. caring sole on sales numbers rather than their suggested "member results". -employee suggestions are ignored. All current employees have voted to get a bio wall, at least so that staff can learn about each other, trainer certifications and specialties, etc. even if it were only in the staff-only break room. yet all attempts to add a bio wall have been turned down. -needed basic office supplies are rarely supplied regularly. -tensions from managers failure of not making quotas affect team moral and detriment team work and team moral. -compensation of trainers are 40% supplement sales, 40% pt sales, and 20% actual training already paid clients. comp plan based on arbitrary math designed to prevent trainers from making livable wage, if not minimum wage, for months-years. Even though if trainer does 100 paid sessions per month, worth at least $30ea which brings the gym $3000-4500 per month. the trainer rarely gets any of the money that they made. -monthly salary based on either minimum wage OR Commission, which is (10% supplement sales) + (50% initial pt sales once) + (10% New business) + ($9/hour consultation session) + ($12-16/pt session) + ($15/guest pass). with minimum supplement qualifiers of 750/1000/1500, this means that if you don't sale more than 750 supps per month, any paid pt sessions that you do are now worth 0$ towards commission. If you work full time, its next to impossible to make more than 12.50/hr in the first 3-6 months. after that, its a constant struggle to make money that compares to another regular $16/hour job. -employee training is 100% sales training and 0% PT training. -trainers expected to provide pt routines, meal plans, exercise tracking and more, through a pt folder. all paid for by the trainer without compensation. -trainers expected to provide 3 $50+ prizes each for member promotion, either through business networking or self provided by trainer. -trainers undergo monthly dialog testing for sales training. -With such a high turn-over rate due to high workload/low compensation, members and clients complain about constant staff change and low report with staff. creating a social disconnect with clients because they have no guarantee of staying with a favorite trainer. -$9 Consultation sessions are easily "RTC'd", non-paid, due to easily made mistakes on member fitness information cards. example, if you complete the full hour training session, fill out the members fitness information, schedule them for the next session, then turn in the card with a "next session date" missing. you wont get paid for that entire session. even though that member is scheduled and in the system. management is constantly finding any reason to not pay you for work after the work is already done. -management claims that the business works as a big "team" but then disciplines you for talking with other members of the team about any topic of discussion, including relevant conversation with a task between the employees in question. -business CEO's have employees sign a 5 page "believer" agreement that states "employees at muv fitness are paid twice a livable wage in exchange for supplying a high level of service". while, at the same time, not a single non-manager employee is making more than $15/hr, most likely minimum wage. -trainers are expected to lead the weekly Saturday boot camp class of 50+ members, maintain high energy levels and be loud as possible. often times, I'd yell enough to lose my voice for days on end. Yet these boot camp sessions are not paid. no possibility of commission compensation. -managers are compelled to keep trainers for months until they come close to making commission wages, just to let them go in exchange for a new trainer. so that they can have them do the same level of work, but for possible 6 more months at minimum wage. just another reason the turn-over rate is so high. -management often retaliates against employees that openly discuss wages and compensation systems. by either giving a write-up or letting go the employee. This is directly against federal NRA, national relations act, which is to ensure fair compensation and union creation.
