Run, don't walk

Pros

The pay, benefits, and work/life balance are excellent. The company does not discriminate, but hires diverse, quality people. You know you're doing something worthwhile.

Cons

Company has been a disorganized dumpster fire since being shed by the parent company and sold to Apollo. Now in the process of a "merger" with Cengage, which presumably wants only the name and goodwill that come with it. Company solves their mistakes with mass downsizings, while incompetent higher-ups and various useless departments are protected.

RUN FOR THE HILLS!

Pros

The majority of the people are smart and hard working. Flexible work environment, family friendly.

Cons

MHE used to be an amazing place to work, but when the company was sold, upper management was continually changed in hopes that the company could catch up technologically. They then began to hire management who knew nothing about the business and then rapidly promote them. Marketing in the Professional division is a circus, they hire confused consultants to lead the charge. If you want to live through constant layoffs, never ending management changes, no inside promotions and answering to circus clowns this is the place for you! No I am not a bitter past employee, just saddened at what a once great company has become. However, there is one caveat, men do rise through the ranks more quickly, especially those who are yes men. If you meet this criteria, apply, your career might skyrocket here.

Pros

Highly intelligent workforce that is very much motivated by the nature of the work - providing students with educational tools that inspire them to love learning and excite them to reach for the top. I found this element of working at MHE to be inspirational to me! Well-run meetings in my department - no meeting lasts more than 1 hour, unless it is an actual working meeting.

Cons

Even after the McGraw-Hill split, there remains a fear to try new things or try things differently. MHE tends to be conservative when it comes to innovation. Human Resources has lost its two-fold focus: help management meet business objectives and ensure employees receive are treated civilly and that each staff member has the right to grow and advance within MHE. Now, it appears that the focus is only on helping management meet business objectives. Perhaps, HR needs new blood. It's sad that MHE is solidifying its reputation as being unable to be flexible and to reach out past its competitors to build the most robust, validated curricula for all students.
