Fun Work, Toxic Workplace

Pros

The work is a lot of fun. You get to work on a variety of projects for a variety of client so there is never really a dull moment. Some of the management team are really great people who are passionate about the work. When you and your boss are both passionate about the work, it makes work fun. There are a lot of opportunities to learn and carve out your own niche if you want. The education assistance is a really great benefit. The only caveat is you have to stick around for x amount of years or you have to repay it (which is 100% fair). There are some really great people at TSTS who know what they are doing, are passionate about their work, and enjoy coming to work every day.

Cons

While some of the management team are really great, other members of the management team are not. They have a tendency to micro manage and want control of everything so they overstep their bounds and create issues where there didn't need to be issues. Some of the management team can also make a lot of assumptions about people and circumstances and believe their assumptions as gospel without any insight into the people or the circumstance. This is very much a family company, so there is nepotism that goes on. The health insurance isn't very good and there is no family leave (maternal or paternal). Since you are a consultant, maximizing billable hours is your goal. However, you're judged on your hours billed to the client, not hours worked on the client and management writes a lot of hours off. So your performance metrics are skewed.

Pros

I've worked at Twin State for 12 years and consider myself friends with the CEO. The company has been good to me, with raises every year and showing concern for our career goals.

Cons

The past 5 years have been tumultuous as leadership tries to expand the business. Expansion has been organic for the sake of covering all the customers who want service from our networking department. I have seen people given leadership roles and seen them taken away at the CEO's whim. The CEO has stated they intend to retire in a couple of years, but with the amount of control they continue to exert over the company, I'm not sure I can take that seriously. I have had to really let go of my attachment to anything internal to make it through the day. There's also really nowhere to go in terms of job titles, so any advancement in your career is performed on your own time. There is a lot of lip service paid to employee satisfaction but the leader behind the leader just wants to see billable hours.
