This Was My Dream Job

Pros

The mission, the benefits, the beauty of the facility, much of the staff, work-life balance, weather closing policies.

Cons

Working at Wolf Trap was my dream job. However, my boss made it a demoralizing, demeaning experience for me. I worked harder than I had at any previous job, but my boss was impatient with me from the first day. No learning curve was tolerated. My boss rolled their eyes at me constantly and turned or walked away from me in annoyance when I asked for clarification. I was a PT employee, but I was constantly expected to take on more work. I could have easily worked 50+ hours/week. I was told I was the SME/Manager, but my boss expected me to do all assignments to their exact specifications, the words, the punctuation, the formatting. I was merely the data entry person for their work. I could not write my own emails. All emails had to be copied from what was sent previously. The obsessive requirement to document every process immediately and save every single email to a specific folder for future use was crippling and far too time-consuming. I had no autonomy at all, and I know I was capable of doing the work expected of me. In addition the quality of my work was compared to other employees. I was made to feel totally incompetent. My co-workers told me they felt badly for me because they heard how my boss talked to me. They were very nice to me and appreciated my work. If not for my experience, I would have given Senior Management 5 stars.

Pros

Non-profit, great mission, dynamic, fun, committed co-workers. Financially solid, strong history, stellar national reputation in performing arts and education. Great benefits.

Cons

Senior staff is paid well, mid and lower level underpaid and some what exploited. Rare opportunity for advancement. Years of outstanding performance reviews not recognized with increases in compensation annually even if revenues increase. Challenging political environment. Some Sr. Directors under qualified and poor team builders/leaders yet are continue to be supported by management while their departments lose talented committed staff.

Pros

As a performing arts organization, they really do care about the quality of the work, and are doing a better job at bringing in new, diverse performers. The people who work there really do care about the mission, and in providing a quality experience for the community. The Barns is a hidden gem.

Cons

Here's what I will say: they're trying. But it took a while for this to happen. Benefits are decent, but salaries are low. The amount of expected output is high. HR is not great at resolving problems, unless it's something they can't ignore. Hopefully that is changing. There's a lot that needs to be done to reach out to audiences outside of Nova. Some members of upper mgmt are stuck in their ways, and not always respectful of their employees. Not a place to advance - so a decent place to be short term, but don't expect to be there long term, if career advancement/salary increases are impt to you.
