Absolutely terrible 401K plan. The 401K on the employer match has a five year ( 20% X 5 years) vesting period. Worst I have ever seen. For each year's vesting though to get your hard earned 20% of employer match you need to fulfill the following criteria:
You must have worked at least 1000 hours in that specific year. This means however, that if you start in August, you have no chance of working 1000 hours in that year. Even though you can not start contributing after 90 days of employment, you will still loose employer match for no reason.
You have to be employed on December 31, to get the employer match. So if you worked hard the whole year and you leave the company on December 14th, you loose ALL employer match for that year.
Simple fact is that employees and even higher management people are not aware of these things. It was me, kind of educating them, that obviously did not come across well, Not to mention the fact that even the 401k administrator company manager had no clue, she thought that the year in which the 1000 hours had to be collected was starting as of the date you start the job, rather than January 1.
These rules are good for the company, and makes administration simple for them, but are real bad for the employee.
