The particular facility that I worked at (not sure of policy within other facilities) offered a cushion of 50 hours or unpaid sick time within a fiscal year. The pitfall of this is that once your 50 hours are gone, you are considered an attendance risk and will become subject to disciplinary action up to termination.

If you are sick, take a day - no sick bank. Although they do monitor "casual sick" and I am sure nip abusers use; for most non-abusers, it is nice.
