The discount is actually pretty low. Wish it was a bit more.

Pro: you have a wide array of vehicle to pick from and they pair you with a sales manager to assist you with the purchase and outline the discount exactly. You get discounts on accessories installed and the extended service plan CarMax offers for retail cars.
Cons: Loopholes. CarMax does not want to miss out on getting the most for the vehicles they offer. Retail cars have to be available for up to 14 days (no customer test drives, no orders built) so it narrows things down a bit. The discount on average for a car off the lot is approximately $1500-$2000. If you get an extended service plan its almost like getting it for free.

If you transfer in a car or choose to buy a car that has not been on the lot that long, the discount is pretty insignificant.

The vehicle employee discount is a joke. They lure you in by saying that you get wholesale cars at 300 over purchase plus any reconditioning. Yet when I checked on a car they told me the price is 1500 over purchase and no reconditioning had been done. Plus you have to pay a $60 safety inspection AND pay for any repairs before you can even test drive it. Retail discounts aren't much better. The last one I looked at had no discount even after sitting on the lot for the requisite 14 days. As a part time employee, the discount is the one and only benefit you get. It seems like they would want to make it somewhat attractive so that they could keep employees.

The employee discount is on cars, but there are a lot stipulations as to how the discount can applied making it hard to use. One perk is you did get to see cars before they go on sale you can get "first dibs".
