The clinical ladder is gone but you can move up to charge and assistant manager.
Unfortunately anyone who's "in" with their manager and has some nursing experience can get moved up to management eventually and that means some managers have no leadership or management experience.
If you are short-staffed, which everyone usually is, your unit can freeze transfers and you can get stuck somewhere for quite a long time. I have seen them give out penalties to other nurses and if you get a write-up you have to stay on the unit a certain # of months before being permitted a transfer. They will hold up transfers a long time so look carefully for a good unit with a great manager. Ask multiple staff RNs about their experiences with their specific manager before accepting a position.
