They give about 1 week of paid sick days a year if your full time. You can use your vacation time for sick days too. If you have used those up and still call off sick, you get many warnings about your attendance before you get fired. They try not to fire anyone right away since they don't want to pay unemployment. They do everything they legally can to not have to pay unemployment. If they know you have a certain health problem, they have you sign up for FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) that way you have about 3 months a year to call off. You never get paid for FMLA though.
