Can be generous, but if an employee is on unpaid leave, the bonus isn't paid during that period. It stings particularly badly for new parents, because the parental leave is minimal (3 weeks), so with a new baby, not only do you have to choose between your baby and your job, but you don't get the bonus for the period that you were bonding.

Bonuses are distributed twice a year, not consistent, depends on how well the company does in that half of the year. If you're a top employee you may receive an extra bonus but this is tough to get.
