If you show the slightest interest at becoming a shift lead, they will begin to work with you immediately and promote you almost immediately (if you are responsible, reliable, and capable). They don't try to throw everything at you at once. You have enough time to become comfortable with a few new responsibilities at a time before they stack on more. If you want to move even further up in the company, they will begin to teach you, but there is not as many positions and it will take more time and experience to move up.
