As far as I'm aware, there is no family medical leave, and if there is, it certainly isn't paid

They do not have family medical leave as in FMLA with the doctor's signed form. If you bring one in, it will be denied. You can request a leave of absence for a specific length of time at I think it is 40% of your normal pay rate. So if you or your family member gets sick, you can't just take a week off. You have to request it at least 2 weeks in advance, and even then there is no guarantee. Most people don't know that far in advance unless it is a scheduled procedure. Then there is always the risk if you take too much time out at once that they will replace you, stating your position could not be temporarily filled for that length of time.

You have to work for them for 1 year to get this perk. I currently am having this issue where I both have my own medical problems and my mom is terminally ill, but I'm forced to wait for the benefits for another 4-5 months.

I have seen coworkers with severely grievous long term situations get generous FMLA accomodation for up to 3 months of absence.

Pretty standard FMLA. They definitely take steps to protect the employee.

When a manager goes on leave, they can stay on it as long as they want, come back whenever they want to the same pay, and you CANNOT replace them. Really hurts internal promotion and training in other departments.
