Performance Bonuses are paid to those who bring in the most "new lives covered". It doesn't matter how many dollars in mutual fund sales you bring in, performance is based on how many life insurance contracts you write. Life insurance applications only count if they are finished and approved so you could write 50 applications your first month and only get credit for a few if you have a lot of people who are not approved or who decide not to finish their contracts because they didn't get the rating they were hoping for. Underwriting process is very scrutinized. It's hard to get approved for life insurance if you have any underlying health issues.

The independent agents set up there own bonus packages. My agent I worked for barely ever gave a bonus even though we always met quotas.
