There is no need to give proof of sick days, doctors' visits, etc, unless you are applying for FMLA for a long-term illness. It's pretty good! However, all days off (vacation OR sick) come out of the same pool of PTO, so you could end up losing vacation time if you're ill. It is more typical for employees to work from home when sick than to take sick time off.

You receive sick days, but they cannot be used as vacation days if you have them left over. This might have changed, but was a little frustrating for anyone who is hardly sick. They frowned upon the idea of 'planned sick days' so it was hard to get by with considering them one in the same.
