U.S. Government will automatically contribute 1% of your salary and match the next 4% you put in, for a maximum of 5% in addition to whatever the IRS elective deferral limit is for the year. The TSP is bar none the lowest expense ratio defined contribution plan out there (27 basis points). That 27 cents in fund fees on every $1,000.00 invested!- do the math, you make our with much more money over your career not going to fund managers. You are also now automatically enrolled at 3% (and can un-enroll) upon hire, your matching contributions vest upon hire, and you are enrolled in a appropriate Lifecycle Fund (age/horizon date fund) based upon your age. All in all, the U.S. government's version of the 401K is the best around. Aside from limited investment options (a mutual fund window should be coming by 2020 or so) it is superb.
