This is really dependent on department and manager, there is no set rule. However, some departments frown upon work from home while others are completely fine with it as long as you do your work. They do prefer that you physically BE in the office and you're not choosing to work from home everyday or every week. Although I know some departments are allowed to work from home at least once a week.
