I had 2 interviews--a phone screen with a recruiter and one with the hiring manager. The interview process was easy and mostly casual. The interview with the hiring manager was remote. These two interviews occurred within a week.
The phone screen was a typical conversation about my overall experience and why I would be a good fit for the role. There was also a discussion of the needs of the role and salary. The publicly posted job description on listed the salary range $90,000-$115,000 per year. I told the recruiter that due to my almost 10 years (at the time) of experience as well as where the job market was for Social Media Marketing Managers, my salary range was $110,000 to $115,000. She said they could work with that because it was within their range.
During the interview with the hiring manager, we had a nice hour conversation about the specifics of the role and what she was looking for. She explained the role would also be a leadership role that would oversee the work of the social media specialists on the team. I was able to speak to my experience as a leader since I had previously managed teams with success. A part of the interview that was a bit uncomfortable, however, was when the hiring manager talked about the attitudes of the social media specialists and their need for humility, which is why none of them were considered as internal candidates for the position. It did concern me since these were the people I was supposed to lead, but if they already had a reputation as difficult to manage/work with, it would force me to start at a great disadvantage.
After the the second interview, a week and a half goes by before the recruiter schedules a follow-up call with me. This call was to discuss the verbal offer. It was the call the turned my overall experience negative, as the recruiter presented me an offer of $100,000 per year, which was $10,000 to $15,000 below my salary range. Moreover, the recruiter explained that $100,000 was the maximum they could go for the position, which baffled me since again they listed the job with a range of $90,000 to $115,000. Why have that listed if you could not even afford to pay the salary? Why not listed the maximum as $100,000?
Following the call, I received the written offer, which I told the recruiter I need a day to consider and discuss with my family. Thankfully, I had been interviewing with another organization at the same time, and that organization also offered me a position at the wage I had requested. This made my decision easy, so I emailed the recruiter for this position to inform her I was declining their offer, as I received another offer within my salary range.
