      Business Development Executive/Manager Interview

      Aug 12, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Academia (London, England) in Aug 2016

      Interview

I was approached by an in-house recruiter for a business development position. During the telephone interview, it became clear that she was more relied on the script than actually listening to what I was saying. On the issue of remuneration, I was told that the average BDM has an OTE of £75K but when enquired about the analysis of basic salary and commission/bonus structure I was given vague and inefficient answers of a basic bellow £30K and no clear breakdown. I asked to have a conversation with someone who knew what was on offer. As expected no one came back, typical unprofessional time wasting recruitment process.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The first question was why I want to leave my current position, which is strange to ask if you are the one who is approached by the recruiter.

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback on your interview, I'm sorry to hear that it wasn't what you expected. You note however that you applied through a recruiter (I would take this to mean a recruitment company) as well as that you were approached by an in-house recruiter. This would imply two separate forms of application which may have lead to some confusion, however my response nonetheless is based on your feedback of the interview itself. I can assure you that we do not use a script during interviews but can only apologise if it felt as though you were not being listened to. Our recruiters are typically very thorough but some questions may be more difficult to answer due to the nature of the answer - such as salary and commission. This would naturally be reliant on many different factors, including aspects such as market salary, your current salary, internal equivalent (i.e. internal market), experience (again against internal equivalent) and the like. Recruitment is not an exact science and, as such, we would always try to come to the best package for the individual that we make an offer to based on a number of factors (as above). This may seem vague, but to pigeonhole one specific salary may then put-off candidates that we would still want to engage with and who could have a very successful career with us. Our commission structure is also lucrative and uncapped, which we have found to be very positive and rewarding for potential candidates and current staff alike. You note that the question you were asked on 'why you want to leave your current role' seemed odd given that you were approached. In this context, yes I can see why you would think so. That being said, perhaps there was an element of miscommunication as the question is somewhat relevant, given that you were open to an interview and therefore would consider leaving your current position. I imagine, had this been positioned a little differently, it may have come across not as unusual. I have however, used this feedback as a training tool for our recruiters, so thank you for noting it as it does speak to the importance of wording questions appropriately. I have also asked the team about queries received that were not responded to and unfortunately, as I am unsure of your name or interview date, I cannot comment on you not receiving feedback. The team has assured me that they do respond and get back to all candidates so I can only apologise if this was not the case in your situation - this is not to our usual standard. If you would like any information, you are more than welcome to call and speak to either the HR Manager or Sales Manager directly - both would be happy to chat with you in more detail. Thank you again for your feedback and we wish you only the best.
