      Senior Product Manager Interview

      Aug 19, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Affirm (New York, NY) in Aug 2020

      Interview

I never write reviews but felt compelled to after not getting an offer after my final round. I had all the qualifications they were seeking but I can't help to think that the lack of diversity at Affirm played a role here in not getting the job. As part of the hiring process, they made their company's Diversity & Inclusion deck available as a way to sell the company and they have stats on all the "progress" they are making but the one that is laughable is in their Black/African American hiring. From 2018 - 2019 it went from 3% to 4% while the company more than doubled their hiring from about 400 to 800 employees. It's laughable as to why they would even include this abysmal stat in that deck, they should just hide it and not include. All other categories saw a significant uptick (e.g. women in leadership roles, LGBTQ). It's probably a blessing in disguise that I was not hired because its pretty clear the company's culture and leadership does not want to hire people that look like me (African American). Affirm's interview process is very lengthy. 1. Initial phone screen with recruiter 2. Followed by phone interview with hiring manager 3. 1st onsite with two PM's (2 hours), 1st hour talking through a hypothetical problem and how to solve it based on their business. 2nd hour walking through a product you launched 4. Final onsite is 4.5 hours!!!! A 30min interview with cross functional team members individually (Sr. Product Designer, SVP of Product, hiring manager, 2 separate Sr. PMs, Engineering Manager, HR recruiter)

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      1. Tell me about a product that has changed your life 2. How do you work with engineering 3. How do you work with UX teams 4. Walk me through a product you launched

Thank you for sharing your interview experience with us. I’m deeply sorry for any points throughout the process where our team fell short in offering you the exceptional candidate experience that we strive to deliver. We actively prioritize diversity of backgrounds and experiences in our recruiting efforts, and we have dedicated staff and programs to ensure that continues, including training to remove unconscious bias from the interview process. I recognize that while we celebrate a diverse and inclusive workforce at Affirm, our representation from the Black community is still disappointingly low. Our Diversity and Inclusion report is made available to candidates as part of our commitment to "No Fine Print", as it's a transparent look at where we are currently and what we are putting in place for improvement. Please know that I hear you, we hear you: it’s on us to do better in our representation. Again, I appreciate your feedback and we have treated this with the utmost concern. If you are open to it, I’d like to hear more about your experience. Please reach out to your recruiter to put us in touch and we can set up a call from there. If not, we thank you again for taking the time to interview with us and we truly wish you the best. Regards, R

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Affirm in Aug 2025

      Interview

The process began with a recruiter call, followed by a 30-minute hiring manager (HM) round, and then a mini onsite that covered 0→1 product design and execution skills. I personally found the process a bit unusual. Although I felt that I didn’t perform well in the HM round, I was still moved forward to onsite. My onsite, in contrast, felt very strong, but I was ultimately rejected.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Hiring Manager Round: Tell Me About Yourself (TMAY), How do you work with Sales and Business Development?, What’s a feature you’ve built in the past and how would you change it?, Walk me through a complex technical product you’ve built. Case Study (Mini Onsite) 0 → 1 Product Thinking: “Pick a favorite product and tell us how you’d improve it.” Execution: “If a key metric for a consumer app was declining, how would you diagnose and respond?”

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Affirm (San Francisco, CA) in Jul 2025

      Interview

They have a standard hiring process that is documented and sent to you when you interview. Applied through a referral. Recruiter > Hiring Manager > Mini Case Round (45 mins each on Product Sense & Product Execution) > Full loop interview (They call it virtual onsite where you meet different stake holders). I didn't clear the Mini Case Round. Hiring manager round was mostly behavioral with questions on "tell me about a time when.. " and expectation was to provide STAR format answers. Case Question 1 (Execution) : RCA type question where I was asked to diagnose fall in metric for an e-commerce business. The interviewer didn't give any other info and when I asked clarifying follow up questions, I was asked to assume and move on. I lost my confidence in this round. Case Question 2 (Product Sense) : What is your favorite product & how would you improve it? With couple of follow up questions. This round was normal. They really insist on customer empathy, tying back to business metrics. So prepare well here. The recruiter was very communicative and got back promptly after each round with status and guidance for the next round. Even when they decided to move on, the recruiter set up time to time to provide actionable feedback. Really appreciate this gesture when it has become a norm to ghost these days.
