After I found an ad for an opportunity on Craigslist, I sent an email to the given email address with my resume attached. Less than a week later I received a phone call and was asked to visit one of their offices in my home state. As time progressed I would report to this office several days a week and would also meet a member of upper management. All the staff except for one particular person were nice. Every once in a while the manager would take me and the other doctor to lunch, while clearly trying to entice me with his crappy "muscle" car he would come in with a couple of times. Every single time I would meet this guy he would tell me what the staff thought of me (their thoughts of me were good in terms of chairside manner but I guess that's not where the money is) and would threaten me that the company would close the office I was to work in if I didn't change my ways. Ultimately I did get the job, and a short time after I began working I saw the manager again and he tells me I "dodged a bullet" because after I was hired, the company started making applicants take an exam to prove their worth not as professionals who wish to provide quality care to humans, but as cash cows. Though it has been years since I left this company after they decided to close down the office I worked at because of a massive debt that existed before I began working there, I wish I could take this exam, just so I could pass it and see the look on his face.
After spending enough time at the office in my home state but before I was hired, I visited the main office located in North Carolina, and I met several people, including the first person I spoke to over the phone days after I emailed my resume. He was an obese guy; I'll call him "Big Guy". Big Guy showed me around one office, and then we both drove to another office. In one of these offices, he sat with me in a room that various workers in the company would enter, talk to me about their role in the company, and exit. Among these people I met was an executive member. I was flattered at first until he started talking beyond introducing himself. I don't remember exactly what he was saying to me; I just remember him looking at my resume, having an unimpressed look on his face, and asking me a question that made me wonder what else this company is looking for besides dentists to provide care. I remember him looking scrawny; he reminded me of a picture of a guy carrying an assault rifle, with the caption in the picture talking about how this guy would carry his rifle everywhere he went. After he left, Big Guy was surprised and said "I never saw him like that before!" Well, Big Guy, I know what that was: I didn't have "it." I didn't have the external catalyst that can cause a chemical reaction in people's brains to make them happy or excited. Maybe it was my face, maybe my eyes, maybe my voice or my suit...who knows?
Of all the people I met while there, nobody was a dentist. The only thing remotely close to that was being told that the company was founded by two dentists, and the descendant of one of them works as a part-time dentist with the company. I never got to see any of them (I do believe at the time I was there, one passed away and the other was long retired, or as someone else said, "on his way out"). On another side note, it is sad that dentistry is slowly coming to this, where dentists are becoming expendable labor, with the majority of the money brought in by their services going to non-dentists that the company could do well enough without. I highly doubt the founders would have wanted it to come to this, and I would not be surprised that the part-time dentist I just mentioned was asked to sign a new contract reducing their pay, asked to change from part-time to full-time, asked to leave altogether, or anything else that would negatively alter their life with this company.
When I returned from North Carolina I met the manager again, and he told me that everyone there thought the same thing about me--that I "didn't show initiative." To this day I'm absolutely baffled at this. I'm not sure exactly what they were searching for but they can never say that I was rude, disrespectful, standoff-ish, holier-than-thou, better-than-thou, etc. Despite not being the hotshot they were looking for I was hired as Practice "Owner" for an office anyway.
