      Associate Interview

      May 8, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Hong Kong
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at AlphaSights (Hong Kong) in Jan 2018

      Interview

Very smooth interview process from beginning to end. I applied to the Hong Kong location via online. They got back to me within a day. The first round of the interview was a one-way video interview where they provide you with the access link. They basically ask you four questions - 30 seconds to prepare for each and 1 minute to record your answer. For this part, they are really testing how you react when given a question on the spot. Nothing too hard, and the questions can be found here on Glassdoor. This round took about 15-20 minutes. I passed that round and they invited me for the second round of interview, which was the video interview with one of their HR staff. This round took roughly about 45 minutes. The person interviewing me was very lovely, she asked questions regarding the role I was applying for and tested my knowledge on the company. It was more of a "getting to know you" type of interview. She then explained the next process after this round, and told me on the spot I passed and was invited to the 3rd round. For this round, it lasted about 2 hours and half. We did this via Google Hangouts because I was abroad and was not in Hong Kong at that time. This round is called the "Case Study" round. The first part is more situational / actually doing the case and the second part is more of a Behavioral & motivational interview. Two different managers interviewed me for each parts. I was given the case 5 minutes before my interview and was then given only 15 minutes to complete the case. Be sure to study up on their website, company and the sample cases they have online. For the case study, I had to pick 2 out 3 scenarios to do and for each scenario, I had to use my own sources (Google, LinkedIn etc.) to find two real expert advisors and explain my thought process and why I chosen them. As for the behavioral & motivational part, be sure to prepare yourself for a VERY thorough interview. The manager asked me some very deep questions which I've never even thought about before. And no matter what you say, they only want to hear what they want to hear. Don't be afraid for this round because they are very nice and helpful... especially for the first part, the manager will ask probing questions to guide you towards the right direction. :) I got an email back within 2 hours saying I passed and was being moved to the final round. For the final round of interview, it was expected to last around two hours again. I did this via Google Hangouts once again (they are very accommodating if you are not in the country). I interviewed with AlphaSights Vice President for the Hong Kong office as well as the hiring manager. Be prepared for a very, very THOROUGH behavioral and motivational interview. I didn't have to do another case study for this round but the VP asked me to name all the interviewers I had spoken with so far, and had me go over the case study I did with him. Meaning, he wants every detail of your case study - Scenarios you had chosen, who you had picked as your advisors, why.. etc. The VP also had me create my own scenario where Professionals would use AlphaSights. Again, he wants details and not just a very broad, general answer. I feel like for this round, they are really trying to see if you will fit in with their company culture and work ethics. You must know your career path and what you want to achieve in 5 years time. I did not pass the final round and they could not provide me detailed feedbacks due to "large volumes of applicants". However, I felt after the final round of interview, I didn't want the position as much as I had thought because I realized AlphaSights did not fit in with what I had wanted to do. Overall, I had a very positive interview with them and everyone I had spoken with are so knowledgeable and bright, and so so incredibly kind. They don't mean it if it seems like they are trying to bring you down. Tip is to be prepared and know for sure you want this position because each round does take a lot of time and effort to prepare for. Just be yourself because they can see through you if you are faking anything (case study round and multiple behavioral / motivational interviews WILL catch you if you lie). Best of Luck! :)
