A recruiter reached out to me over my university hiring portal. I applied with the link they gave me and had to film 3 little 1minute answers to a randomized set of questions. I was then told I’d do an over Skype interview. This was the problem. The person I was corresponding with was not the same person, which wasn’t a problem, but it was clear that he had no interest in me. From the get go, I could tell that he was just forced to interview someone and had maybe already made the decision or was just generally uninterested. Maybe it was from the way I looked (minority woman) I’m not sure. Not to toot my own horn, but I’m an extremely qualified candidate with a lot more corporate level experience than my peers, so it was surprising to receive the interview in the first place to have someone make you feel like your resume is getting trashed promptly after. I tried my best to be enthusiastic and conversational to get him out of the mood he was in, but it was palpable how interested he was in in actually giving me a fair interview unbiased by other factors. There’s only so much charming one can do before it’s both degrading and annoying to the people getting charmed, so while it was an amicable conversation that went through all the motions it was a really dead one from him not giving me a fighting chance.
