      Software Development Engineer Interview

      Apr 2, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      San Jose, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (San Jose, CA) in Mar 2017

      Interview

It was a good experience only for the bar raiser interview where the interviewer admitted twice that he was distracted and didn't listen to the approach I was mentioning. Costed me an opportunity at the end. I was called in for a hiring event after having a phone screening with technical question about "Find the bad build version". It was a straightforward approach and medium difficulty. Most of the telephonic interview was based on behavioral questions (read through the STAR method and Amazon Core Values). Onsite consisted of 4 interviews, 45 mins each. 1. Hiring manager: Asked me questions on core values, principles and situational questions from prev experience. Then the last 15 mins were a system design question on a very popular app. (Signed NDA, sorry). 2. System Design: The interviewer was very friendly and helped me settle down. Discussed a few questions on core values and then a system design on a relatively similar problem of card deck. Code the solution. 3. Algo: Merging and sorting 4. Bar Raiser: The interviewer looked engaging at first but then he got some really important messages/email and didn't pay attention for about 10 mins in a 45 min interview. I thought this was suppose to be a discussion. Then I wrote the code for a section of the solution. I was asked to apply again in 6 months. There is a H1B premium processing freeze which could have resulted in me not getting an offer.

      Interview

      1. Online Application / Recruiter Screen Apply online or get contacted by a recruiter. For technical roles, this often includes an initial phone screen covering background and basic fit. 2. Online Assessment (OA) Common for SDE and many other roles — includes coding problems (usually on platforms like HackerRank), work-style/behavioral questionnaires, and sometimes a "work simulation" assessment. 3. Phone/Video Interview 1-2 rounds with an engineer or hiring manager, mixing technical questions (coding, system design depending on level) with behavioral questions based on Amazon's Leadership Principles. 4. Virtual/Onsite Loop ("The Loop") Typically 4-6 back-to-back interviews (45-60 min each), usually including: Coding/technical rounds — data structures, algorithms, problem-solving System design (for mid-to-senior roles) Bar Raiser interview — a specially trained interviewer from outside the immediate team, focused on ensuring candidates raise the overall talent bar; carries significant weight in the decision Behavioral rounds — heavily structured around the Leadership Principles (e.g., "Customer Obsession," "Ownership," "Deliver Results"), typically using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) 5. Debrief All interviewers meet (or submit written feedback) to discuss the candidate, with the Bar Raiser often having veto power regardless of role level. 6. Offer If approved, HR extends the offer, followed by negotiation. Key things Amazon emphasizes: The 16 Leadership Principles are central to almost every interview — expect to be asked to give specific past examples for several of them. For technical roles, strong DS&A fundamentals plus (at senior levels) system design are essential. Answers should be structured, quantified, and specific — vague answers tend to score poorly with Bar Raisers
