I applied online and received an email some 4-6 weeks later asking for my availability for a phone interview. The first interview consisted of a 30-minute screening call with a recruiter that went well. I was advanced along in the process and we set up a phone interview with the department hiring manager (to whom I would be reporting) and a senior-level executive. A few days before that interview I was contacted by a second recruiter at Amazon whose job was to help me prepare for the actual interview. Her insight was helpful and I appreciated the guidance. Unfortunately, my interview with the hiring manager / senior executive didn't go nearly as well. The conference number we used had a poor connection and it was hard to understand them at times. That was compounded by the fact that neither individual sounded particularly motivated to be on the call. The senior executive did 99% of the talking while the hiring manager remained almost completely unengaged throughout the interview. Only when I directly asked that individual specific questions did I get any kind of feedback. Because of that, it proved difficult to get a read on the person to whom I would be reporting. All in all, it was a somewhat disjointed, low-energy call; I got little or no reaction, one way or the other, to any of my answers. Within 15-20 minutes I felt virtually no positive vibes about the position. I had found multiple local offices / addresses online and wanted to confirm the correct location of the job. However, neither interviewer could provide specific information about the job location. Their response was so wishy-washy and unclear that I pretty much lost what little interest I still had in the position. I sent a perfunctory thank you note and received a rejection email a week or so later.
