      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Apptopia

      Interview

It started off as a normal interview. A charming lady from HR reached out to me and set up an interview. I knew what start up life was about, having a back ground in the company culture for a while I had a solid idea of what to expect. This WAS NOT IT. I am just going to list the red flags: (this has been edited to meet the rules of glassdoor) 1.) Reached out to the guy who runs sales he blinded replied back to me with what I can only assume was a template email, perhaps generated when he gets an email in his inbox? It was trying to sell me the product. Odd, but okay least he is going for the close. 2.) I replied back saying something like "sounds great, but I am applying and just wanted to say hi and let you know I am excited for this interview" or something to that nature. Never got a response back. 3.)They are new to the office, very cool that shows me growth, on my way to the elevator I was rode up with two guys, one senior sales guy from the sound of it and the other maybe an assistant or rookie rep working a senior reps desk, anyhow they thought I was a tenant in the building and they introduced themselves. Cant remember names, but great guys, asked what they did and the senior guy broke it down. This put me at ease because they made it sound fund and relaxing. I left them get off on their floor I went up to the 5th floor and cam back down. Silly, but I had just played it off like I worked upstairs. I get off the elevator and I hear an angry sounding voice. There was a young shortish woman pacing back and forth and looking very distraught. I don't know, but from the sound of it she sounded like she lost a sale. My mind suddenly raced, is quota that hard to hit? Is it that stressful? 4.)I walk into this room with a table far too big for the room its in and wait, a meet a couple of people and finally shake hands with the owner John. I thought I would be meeting with the CEO, but turns out I had agreed to meet with the COO. After talking to him that made sense, he ran day to day while it seemed the CEO was more about growing the company and raising money. Side note, he must be good because John had mentioned they passed 5 million dollars in funding and let me tell you I did not get the vibe that they were breaking even. But I go off topic, John really knew his stuff and I thought I would enjoy working for this guy. I ask about who i report to and could I meet that person He informs me there is no one in charge and I would report to him the COO. YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT, no person in charge of that department and there was no sales Lead. Another person I had tried to reach out too. I take this in thinking okay, this person on the site is fired or quit that explains the email being unanswered. THEN as I leave I see the guy from the picture getting water. So, I quickly ask again about leadership and he pointed out I would report to him. 5.) The offer came with a weird requirement. I don't understand why I got this requirement added to me, but it’s stupid. I have so much experience in sales that I was not kind of bummed about it, but I still thought I should take it. After speaking with my boyfriend he agreed that the whole fake person in charge of that deaprtemnt or the fact he wouldn't introduce me to the person in charge (who's picture is still on the site) made me feel like John did not want me. All these things alone would be okay, but add them together and it feels a little odd. They must be doing something right, the guys in the elevator were happy. The CEO has raised good money. And the COO really knew his stuff, but he was a little odd, but how isn't these days? I think this might be a good place for a Jr. guy to go learn and where senior guys go to die, wait for a real opportunity, or fluff their resume with fancy titles. Good Luck Apptopia! Quick side note, two days later another start up hired me. I am very happy here and just want to point out the market is hot right now, do not settle.

Thanks for taking the time to write this, though at points this feels more like a short story / narrative, than a review of the company. I'd like to address the most important things: 1) "Fake Person In Charge" My name is Jonathan Kay, I am the founder and COO of the company. While I am not sure who you are (as this is an anonymous forum), I am sure that you interviewed with me. There is no mysterious person who runs sales, it is me and only me. Typically how sales departments and sales growth works is that you do not bring on any sales leadership until you have at least 10 full time sales reps. At the time of this comment we have 6. So as the founder, and someone with a strong sales background, I lead and manage the entire sales team (training, questions, closing large deals, etc). At no point had you ever asked me, or our HR Rep, for an introduction to anyone on the team. Because whenever that is done, we give the same response....We do not do this until after an offer is extended. Should you want to meet someone after that point we'd be happy to do that. I am always the person who makes this introduction, and so this is why I can be sure this did not play out as described. Had you asked, this would have been handled much differently. But you did not. 2) Company Health Our company has been around for 5 (almost 6) years at this point, we are backed by gentlemen like Mark Cuban and Ashton Kutcher. Our business has produced revenue since day one, and as of the writing of this review we have tripled revenue since the beginning of the year. So much so that we moved into a new 4,000 sq foot office. This office required a lot of construction (knocking down walls, painting, adding light fixtures, and so unfortunately for ~7-8 weeks the office did not look at professional, and lively as it does now. I tried to explain this during interviews but there is only so much I can do. 3) Weird Offer Requirement I wish this reviewer would have gone into more detail here, as we have the same requirement for all sales people. You must close a sale in your first 6-8 weeks here in order to keep your job. Its very simple for me, we are looking for sales people who believe in themselves, believe in their abilities, are confident, and are very hard working. To date we have only had one person ever miss this, but it has been the best filter ever for hiring sales people as it allows us to not invest time and training (which we invest a lot of) into sales people who do not believe in themselves. To be clear, we have sales people ranging from 1 years experience to 10 years experience, all of which took this "challenge" head on, and are now making 2-3x what they were making when they first started here. People seem to always have opinion (especially in anonymous forums, however, the truth is that if you ask anyone about Apptopia they will tell you two things 1. We are extremely passionate 2. We are extremely transparent. My direct email is Jon (AT) apptopia (DOT) com. Anyone is more than happy to reach out to me directly should you have questions, comments, or concerns about how our company can be a key to your personal / professional growth and success. Jonathan
