      Marketing Interview

      Nov 23, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Apptopia

      Interview

Had a standard phone screen, did a quick writing assignment, and then was brought in to meet the team lead and one of the partners. The money wasn't where it needed to be, but one of the partners wanted to advocate for me. During the interview, one of the partners mentioned the company wasn't so much of a focus as was making money if it is sold in a few years. Appreciate the honesty, at least. The CEO was downright rude to me on a phone call, questioning my skill set. Not for nothing, I've been in my field for awhile and have won awards for my work. I'm not full of hot air; this guy simply doesn't seem to like anyone who is smarter than he is and can potentially reveal weaknesses in his business or his management style. Not sure if it was a woman thing, a tech thing, or simply a unique facet of this company. Regardless, I shut down the interview process then and there, and accepted a job where I'm compensated fairly and appreciated for the skills I possess.

Unfortunately I am having a hard time remembering specifically which candidate this was, as we have not recruited for Marketing for a few months now. However, there are some key things I feel I need to add here: 1) I am rather sorry that anyone on my team (including me or my partner) made you leave feeling like we were "downright rude". Its never our intent (for obvious reasons). We interview a lot of candidates and for more senior positions we can often be a bit aggressive, as we are looking to learn how candidates react to pressure and in certain situations. In most cases this is a productive exercise, but it seems like it backfired a bit here and again I am sorry you left feeling that way. 2) I am not sure the intent of the comment "Not sure if its a woman thing", but this is flat out not true, and not something I can tolerate as its flat out hurtful and incorrect. We currently have women in Director, VP and Executive level roles in the company. We have engineers who are women. Our leading sales person is female, and our hiring is, and always will be gender agnostic. I'd be more than happy to discuss this further with anyone directly - Jon AT apptopia DOT com 3) One of the most important things to note here is the claim that "We simply don't like anyone who is smarter than us". It seems we clearly upset you, and as mentioned above I am truly sorry that we handled this situation poorly. However this claim is just not true. I started this company 6 years ago, I am the founder and COO of the company and I am not even close to one of the smartest people in the company. And I dont want to ever be, I dont ever want our company's success to be capped at my intelligence or my business partners intelligence. We constantly rely on our leaders to take our business to the next level and will continue to do so as we grow and expand our team. As with most comments here, this is Jonathan Kay, I am the founder of the company. Our team is the core of our business and I would always be happy to speak transparently about any comments here. Please just ping me directly jon AT apptopia DOT com - Jonathan
