Three months after applying, the process consisted of an initial call, three virtual interviews, and submitting a short eLearning module. After that, I traveled to Naples for 18 additional interviews. It was intense, but I had the opportunity to meet an amazing learning and development team I would have loved to join.
Everything changed when I met someone from Compliance who plays a central role in the projects tied to this position. I am certain she had the most influence on the hiring decision because, unfortunately, most responsibilities in this role would require close collaboration with her. Within the first five minutes, her dominant, "I do not take suggestions from anyone" attitude became obvious. It was clear that everything would be done her way, no questions asked.
If you applied for the Senior Learning Experience Designer or Senior Instructional Designer position they reposted recently, now you know what to expect. You will be impressed by the team, the beautiful Arthrex facilities, the hotel, and the great benefits. However, collaborating closely with her might give you pause. As many of us in learning and development have experienced, these cross-functional partnerships can be challenging, but this one felt especially rigid and top-down.
The rest of the team was fantastic and made me feel like the right fit. However, after weeks of effort, I only received a brief call with no explanation or future consideration. I was fully committed to giving my best, so it was disappointing.
If you are reading this, be prepared, anything can happen. But the biggest question to ask yourself is whether it is worth spending most of your work time with someone who insists on doing everything her way. Even though she will not be your direct manager, she will very much act like one. No matter how great the company and team are, that is something to seriously consider.
I hope this helps, because the process itself was exhausting, physically and emotionally draining. In the end, it did not lead to anything positive, just nearly two months of wasted time. I am still emotionally recovering, as I really liked the rest of the team.
