      Product Manager Interview

      Dec 14, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through other source. I interviewed at Asana (New York, NY)

      Interview

I was given a homework assignment with a 7 to 10 day time frame to complete and received good feedback to move on to the next step which was a 45 minute phone call with a PM. I have gone through many PM interviews and while I enjoyed working on the homework assignment, I was very dissatisfied by the phone interview. The interviewer asked me the vaguest product question, didn't seem interested, and wasn't active in the conversation. Even though this was an interview, I felt like I was talking to air and I had nothing to work towards for the question. It was just me talking about a vague question aimlessly for a few minutes. Not only that, but I was also given negative feedback afterwards for asking clarification questions to get more details about the hypothetical vague product. If you see that as a negative trait, I don't know what you want in your applicants. I never had an experience like this in any interview with a company, big or small. Aside from seeming disinterested, the interviewer was very nice. The only reason I didn't give this a negative experience is because HR was absolutely lovely. They were attentive and gave constructive criticism and would give you great informational PowerPoints and phone calls between rounds.

      Question 1

Prepare for basic product questions as you would face in any product interview. Hypothetical product X, what would you use as a measurement of success and why, what features would you suggest and change, etc..

      Interview

Start with phone interview and then you have to do a presentation followed by 1:1 with key xfn stakeholders. Interviews are pretty standard PM rounds and the presentation is the most important -- spend a good chunk of time preparing for it -- if you nail that down, rest of the interviews become just about selling you on Asana.
