      Business Assistant Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Aspen Dental in Jun 2025

      Interview

I have a college degree - the position does not require one - and a full time job already but was looking to pivot into a new industry. Applied and had some technical difficulties scheduling my initial interview with the recruiter on their online calendar (and assumed the position had been filled and that’s why there were no available openings to interview). Forgot about the job, was actively applying and searching for others when I was personally reached out to via email and asked to schedule an interview as I was “an excellent fit for the position.” I realized the technical difficulties were on my end and the job in fact was still open. I apologized, communicated the misunderstanding to the recruiter, and scheduled the first interview. She called me and had a short (15-20 minute) session with the general interview questions, nothing out of the ordinary. I did ask the recruiter what her favorite part of working in the office of an Aspen Dental practice was since that was how she began her career with the company and she wasn’t really able to answer the question which seemed like a red flag. This was on a Saturday. I was told it would be a 24-48 hour wait, starting on Monday, to hear back from the practice itself to schedule an in person interview. I heard back way over the 48 hour mark, (actually almost a full week later) which felt inconsiderate of my time. The practice called me at 8 o’clock in the morning and left a message. This felt strange - I have never been contacted so early in the morning during the hiring process. I missed the call, returned it, and was unable to reach anyone despite calling multiple times during the practice’s business hours. I left messages several times and was called one other time while I was at work. I called back two hours later and several time after that and couldn’t get through to anyone and left yet ANOTHER message. Several more days pass and I receive an email saying they were no longer interested in interviewing me and would be seeking new candidates. I felt like my time had been wasted due to poor communication. I explained to the recruiter that I was already working full time, explained that in one of my messages to the practice, and tried my best to reach a single human being at the practice so I could schedule the in person interview and no matter what time of day I tried calling, was just completely unable to get to anyone. I was NOT under the assumption that just because I was specifically asked to interview by the recruiter that I was guaranteed the job, but I was hoping that they’d at least put in a little bit more effort into trying to meet me instead of calling me twice at 8 am (when I was already at work and unable to answer the phone) and calling it quits. I got another job offer for a salaried position making $10,000 more a year than I would have as a business assistant so it all worked out, but I felt like there was a complete lack of common courtesy and professionalism during this hiring process that was a huge turn off.
