Applied for the Portuguese subsidiary in Oeiras, Portugal, for a 1-year internship. Interview was brief and relaxed, with one HR manager and one representative from the actual department, both nice and engaging. I was called back for a second interview in the same week with the head of department, but declined. The company is solid and the work itself is appealing, but interns are offered very poor employment terms. The proposed salary is barely over national minimum wage (€700-750/month gross), despite the very high qualifications required and the expectation that interns perform tasks at the level of an actual employee, as they themselves described. No holiday or Christmas bonuses, no holiday leave on contract and, most likely, no eligibility for unemployment benefits. These conditions are non-negotiable, even though the job posting described the salary as being according to demonstrated knowledge/experience. So, all they have to offer in exchange for one year of exploitation is their name on your CV (also pretty much their own words).
