I applied for the job on 7/18/18. I had a phone interview shortly after that. The phone interview was easy and not stressful at all. I mostly just talked about my education, experience, and expected compensation. The AvalonBay recruiter who conducted my phone interview was not great and kept having me repeat myself. For example, in response to "Tell me about your last job," I told her about all my job duties for my previous job, and I concluded by explaning, in detail, why I left. She responded with, "Ok, and why did you leave that job?" She no longer works for AvalonBay. She's been replaced by someone really sweet and personable who hopefully actually listens rather than just robotically going down a list of questions. I had my in-person interview at the regional office on 8/2. This interview was very easy and not stressful at all. I was interviewed by the then-receptionist, who just asked me about my education and work experience, and then I was interviewed by the person who would be my manager. She was very transparent and immediately put me at ease. During the interview, we discussed growth opportunities. I received my offer letter the very next day, and at that time, it was communicated to me that my start date would be 8/27. I immediately completed the background check and the drug test, and then I was told that AvalonBay would reach out to the references I listed on my resume. I then waited for three excruciating weeks until my first day with no communication from AvalonBay. (Hopefully this isn't typical and was just due to the less-than-stellar recruiter we had at the time.) I'm a pretty anxious person, so during those three weeks, I was constantly worried that at any minute, AvalonBay would call me to rescind the job offer. So if you've gotten an offer letter and now it's just radio silence, don't despair! The hiring/onboarding process is a little slow, but totally worth it.
