I replied to an ad on their website for sales staff, and was interviewed on the phone. I was told that If i was selected for next steps I would be called i for a face to face. I did get that call and scheduled an interview. The day before the interview, I was asked if we could push it back a few days as there was a scheduling issue with on of the interviewers. I agreed of course. The interview was with the founder of the company and another company employee. I was asked many questions about my history and about my understanding of technology. I was asked to demonstrate my knowledge of excel. I was asked about my knowledge of their products ( On-Time and Transfer Big Files). I was asked to explain my employment history and how I found myself looking for a new position.
After this interview (lasted about an hour) I was told that I would be called back for a second interview if i was selected. I was not selected for a second interview, but I responded to my PFO email, and was very firm about my stance and how I was sure I would make a difference in this company, or whichever one i landed with, while remaining very thankful for the opportunity, and very open to them having a change of mind. I got a reply saying that my email had swayed their decision and I was asked back for the second interview.
I went back and met with the Culture Development officer and a member of the sales team this time around. This interview was more to determine whether I fit into their culture, more than about my skills and knowledge of technology. I was asked what I new about their products, and about my athletic history, and about my leadership ability. They are a flat company (no managers), and I felt that my lifetime of being team captain and a coach and manager of high level minor hockey programs was actually a detriment to my chances. They seems to be more interested in a team player (which I feel a leader certainly is)
I left the interview feeling that i did alright, better than the first time around, had tremendous dialogue with both interviewers, especially the culture officer. It was the same as the first interview, but I would have to wait for them to discuss my candidacy, and them I would be made an offer or told they had chosen not to move forward. I got the reply that while I was impressive in many ways, there was more concern about my as a candidate than enthusiasm.
I am 25 years into my career at this point and I believe that my age, and my history of being in leadership roles, and my hesitation with the excel question were the big reasons I was not offered a position. My IT sales resume is very strong, and there really was nothing else that stood out to me as reason for not making an offer to me. I have been to a rodeo or two, and I KNOW I would be a very productive member of their team.
Despite not getting an offer, I would love to work for this company. They are doing it right, and it is evident by the quality of staff I met and by the energy that buzzes in their office building. This company is going places.
