After submitting my application, I was given a first, virtual interview. I was told beforehand, in the email invitation, that this would include a 20-question interview on general concepts in experimental biology, probability, statistics, genetics, and algorithms. I was also told the questions would be simple. During the interview, I was able to answer maybe half of the questions correctly, but I struggled on the other questions. I did not review basic concepts in these topics prior to the interview. That may have helped, but also I felt put on the spot. They did allow me to have access to Google during the interview but indicated I would be penalized for using Google on certain questions (ie questions to see if I had something memorized). Overall, the job would not have been a good fit for me anyway, but in receiving this technical interview at the start, it felt like the company was more interested in screening on some arbitrary ability to answer technical questions on the spot, rather than considering the amount of hands-on, relevant experience I had listed in my resume.
