Thanks for the response and I am sorry that it did not work out. We try to filter candidates with a first round of SQL questions as you mentioned. This does reduce the number of qualified candidates, but anyone who is interested in researching via Google would likely pass it. On the other hand, we have had people who have never used SQL in anyway pass our onsite test since it is open book, and candidates can ask for any help that they like (just like in the real day to day job). For that reason, we don't want the first screening to be too demanding. That said, we will review our approach to ensure that no one has a terrible experience. For anyone who is interested in going through our interview process, my advice is to Google search any questions first, then direct questions to our team and be very open about what you are struggling with. Ultimately we are trying to simulate a real world situation, where people either get stuff done because they already know how to do it, or they use all of the resources at their disposal to get the job done. Either approach is completely acceptable to pass our test.
