      Graphic Designer Interview

      Nov 24, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Block (New York, NY) in Sep 2020

      Interview

Recruiter was very pleasant to talk to and provided a good overview and introduction to the role and to the team. However upon meeting the hiring manager, I was disappointed and shocked at how things went. He was distracted throughout the meeting did not make any eye contact or bothered to ask me any questions. I've never been in an interview or with an interviewee that made me feel like he did not want to listen or meet with me. He barely talked about his team and when he did he, he came across very arrogant. There is no other way to say this, but I definitely felt prejudiced due to my race and gender. There is a sort of behavior that most POC would know and have experienced, that despite your best efforts, someone refusing to respect you and your time can be extremely upsetting. I have no doubt that I was just selected to meet that 'diversity hiring quota' so that this guy could hire whomever he wanted. I expected better from Square. If Square is truly serious about this, they should investigate this matter and make sure people are held accountable.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Hiring manager asked where I was based but no other question that pertained to the role, or what value I could bring to the team.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Block (San Francisco, CA) in Dec 2017

      Interview

The interview process included two phone calls, one with the hiring manager and then one with a recruiter. Then a light design test, followed by interviews with 6 different people, and then a presentation of my portfolio.
