I interviewed for a barista position at their Mint Plaza location, after an initial phone screen. I'm affable, aware of my weaknesses and always on the search for more knowledge and learning opportunities. I am also very experienced and receptive. I've always wanted to work for Blue Bottle and came in willing to start at the bottom. I met with two managers, both of whom presented poorly: disinterested, posing very few questions, and clearly trying to get onto the same page with each other as they interviewed me. I came away from our conversation with the impression that they'd already found a candidate, and that their ideal profile was for someone with little to no experience. Sometimes it makes sense to hire people with less experience for the purposes of rounding out staff dynamics or for a personality that really shines; a completely acceptable and sometimes advantageous way to hire for several reasons. But please, Blue Bottle recruiters and cafe staff on the ground: get aligned on what your business and individual locations' needs are vis-a-vis your hiring practices and interview cycles. Stop wasting the time of your retail employees, and don't waste the time of job seekers. It's tacky. Everyone in this industry knows each other, and people talk -- at the very least, so that they can tell others when to steer clear.
