I applied online and got a phone call from a recruiter. He asked some basic questions that are impossible to fail and set up a "technical phone screen" with someone from the team (not necessarily hiring manager).
That phone call was about half an hour and it was a very extensive review of my resume. I got a phone rejection three weeks later.
