I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Boston Consulting Group (Boston, MA) in Jul 2018
Interview
I applied as an experienced hire for the Associate position. The process was very long and overall negative.
No phone screen but rather invited right on site after sending in my resume.
After submitting my application it took about a month to hear back and be invited on-site.
I was offered an on-site interview for a date two months later in July for a start date eight months later (in Q1'18) (this seemed pretty odd!).
I was offered 8 different time slots to interview. When I arrived, three other applicants were there. So I assume they were interviewing as many as 30 applicants for the role I applied for. I was interviewed in the first round by two project leaders (people in their mid-30s).
Although I clearly had a health care background and I was told by one of my interviewers that the Boston office was 80% health care focused, the people that interviewed me were retail and PE focused. This was discouraging.
My first interviewer was 10 minutes late. So she only had time to discuss the case with me and ask me two behavioral questions about leadership. I was not asked about my resume or why BCG. I got a case question about bank costs and areas of specialization (should a small bank focus in healthcare or gas industries, for example). This was pretty easy.
The second interviewer was very talkative and asked me a case on credit card transaction costs. This was a tough one as I was not familiar with the credit card company business model!
It took BCG about 4 days to get back to me to tell me I didn't get the offer.
I had to follow-up for feedback and this took longer than expected. So this was disappointing. Moreover, I was called by the Recruiting Manager (the head of the BCG Boston recruiting team). Completely unexpected since the call was scheduled with a Recruiting Associate that helped coordinate my interview.
Also, a bit strange, initially I had one Recruiting Associate reach out to me to invite me on-site. She wrote back to me once or twice about small questions I had. But she did not respond in the month leading up to my interview. I had another Recruiting Associate email the day before about the address for the office.
I asked to expand my office preferences multiple times to the Recruiting Associates and on the day of my interview to help increase my chances. However, I was ultimately told one reason I was not accepted was because I only chose the Boston office where there is already high application volume.
The recruiting manager also suggested the best time to apply off-cycle is in the beginning of the year as the summer spots are filled with PhDs and the fall spots are filled with undergrads and MBAs. He said interviews were held monthly. However, not sure why when I applied in April I was not invited on-site till July.
Overall, this was a pretty negative experience! I was told I was too nervous and did not drive the case enough (however, I had trouble talking over the second interviewer!!).

Interview
Round 0 had an assessment, round 1 had 1 case with a human then 1 case with a chatbot. The cases weren’t too complicated mostly revolving around profitability and break even pricing, but the subject matter was niche.
