      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at BuildOps in Jan 2025

      Interview

If you're not desperate, avoid them like the plague. Poor communication. Toxic interview behavior. As near as I can tell, they used me as an insurance policy in case another candidate who was further along didn't work out. I was contacted by their recruiter. I didn't contact them; they contacted me. We did a call screen that went well. This led to a video call with CTO that also went well. Then they asked me to develop a project plan for a customer-facing data warehouse. I spent several hours on the project plan. Then I got this message from the recruiter: Great news, we'd like to move you forward to the virtual interview loop! Please provide me with as much availability starting next week. Keep in mind, this interview loop will last approximately 4 hours, so if you could submit your availability in 5 hour blocks to create flexibility, that would be great. Once received, I'll get you scheduled and send over the interview prep. I sent my availability. Did not hear back from the recruiter after a couple days, so I reached out and asked what the status was. After a few more days, I got this response: Apologies for the delay, a lot of the interview team is currently traveling at the moment, but I'll report back as soon as I find some time on their calendars. If I need more availability from your side, I'll be sure to reach out. OK no problem. In the middle of the availability window that I gave them, I got this message from the recruiter: I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to follow up and thank you for taking the time to speak with us about the Director of Engineering, Data position at BuildOps. We truly appreciate the effort you put into the process and enjoyed getting to know you. I wanted to let you know that the role has been filled. That said, we were really impressed with your background and experience, and we’d love to stay in touch for future opportunities that may be a strong fit. Thank you again for your time and interest in BuildOps. Wishing you all the best in your job search, and I hope our paths cross again down the line! On the one hand, it's disappointing and frustrating to be misled and lied to. But in the long run it's a blessing when a company reveals itself to you before you make a mistake and actually join.
