      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      Sep 3, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Bumble Inc. (London, England)

      Interview

The initial stage was a phone interview with their HR manger, followed by an online technical interview with two of their developers. This initial process was very fast. All the people I spoke to come across as very friendly. Both the role and the projects looked very interesting and challenging ’on paper’. But the interview process was very badly organized and as a result very disappointing. Basically, Bumble forgot to let me know a) that the online technical interview included a long coding challenge, and b) the topics that it would cover. They also acknowledged this mistake during the technical interview. The coding challenge requires to brush up on of the topics covered. For instance, for how much you may have written database queries in the past, you will need to look it up again if in the last year or so you worked solely with non-relational databases. Furthermore, knowing that there is a coding challenge you would make sure that you are using a full monitor rather than your laptop screen. Bumble didn’t come back with a response after I kindly raised the above points. Again, this was a very disappointing experience.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The technical interview included a 1.5 hrs online coding challenge. This is overseen by the interviewers who question you about the decision making process.

      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Bumble Inc. (London, England) in Dec 2023

      Interview

The technical interview was done through a video call using a shared code platform. Before the interview, the HR team sent me an email with a lot of topics that could be asked during the technical interview, with an emphasis on understanding mobile apps and networking. During the interview, I got none of the above. I had PHP questions that went to understanding character encoding on 1-byte or multi-byte, manipulating arrays, and having to look in the PHP doc to find uncommon functions. Overall that part was interesting and allowed me to show how a candidate deals with the unknown, read the doc, and figure out a solution. Then there were SQL questions. It was bad. The questions were gotchas like "This is the 2 tables, find the names and the grade order by date, YOU CAN'T USE JOIN" and another question very similar. The problem is the questions are done live with another person who keeps interrupting you, looks at you in silence, and does not give very relevant help. At some point, it becomes very uncomfortable having to decypher those "questions". The contrast between the 2 parts is too much. You go from the PHP part with uncommon problems, having to demonstrate thinking, knowledge of the PHP engine, knowledge of computer science, and demonstrating ability to look into documentation; to a SQL part full of gotchas without any mental space available to think and try different solutions. I got rejected due to not being able to find the solution to 1 SQL question on time, quite disappointed as I managed to find it in seconds once I was on my own

PHP: count the number of characters in a word and check if 2 words are anagrams. The words contain multi-byte characters and non-ASCII (like Spanish or Chinese characters)

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Bumble Inc. (London, England) in Mar 2021

      Interview

Interview process was organised in 4 steps and was fairly efficient. Talent managers provided good communication throughout and interviewers were very engaged and pleasant. Probably one of the best interview processes I went through. Every member of the team was helpful and showing a lot of empathy.
