      Solutions Leader/Solutions Consultant (Federal) Interview

      Jun 25, 2020

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at C3 AI in Jun 2020

      Interview

The entire process took about 5 weeks. I applied on their site after initially being recruited by an employee for a different role. I believe the recruiters typically do a phone screen, however I guess my resume made enough of an impression to skip directly to a 30 minute phone interview with a C3 employee filling a similar role. The interview was focused on my past experience and my exposure to AI in the military specifically. I'd consider this more of a screen to verify that I could speak to my resume and it's in line with what the company needs. The interviewer recommended me for the next step, which was a writing assignment. The specifics of the writing assignment was to present ~10 use cases in the federal government that AI could help solve. Naturally I feel like this is an easy way to steal intellectual property, but it's also a great way for them to assess your understanding of the federal problems and how to recommend to the client the way you intend on solving their problems. The writing assignment took me about 10 hours and was due 7 days from the email assigning the task. After their review of the assignment, which apparently went to two of the four next interviewers passed the test. The final steps were a group of video interviews (which I assume would normally be in person in a non-COVID situation. The first interview was to be run by two Solutions Leaders (both in the Commercial side of C3.ai) for 45 minutes. One interviewer never showed up, so I had a conversation with the one Solution Leader for 50 minutes. That interviewer explained the position a bit more thoroughly, and asked a bunch of STAR style questions. Because C3.ai is only now expanding into the federal government, they don't have as many employees that understand the military, so I spent more time explaining the problems in the military then how I solved these complex problems. Next up was a interview with the Director of Sales. That was a quick 30 minute interview. The interviewer was professional, and it was more like a conversation. This was purely due to their personality, however there wasn't much discussion about my technical acumen. The last interview was with the CTO. This interviewer maintained a completely different approach. This was very much a technical acumen interview and I clearly did not make the cut based on our conversation. It was hard to navigate, and that interviewer stopped me in the middle of an answer, but was professional throughout the entire conversation. I could tell I didn't satisfy their needs, so I asked them flat out how I could improve myself, to which they did not answer. I will absolutely say that interviewer was the decision making authority regardless of how the previous two interviews went. That person is also very well suited for the position and said that the Solutions Leader position at C3.ai is the toughest position in the entire company. BLUF: Be prepared to spend a significant amount of energy during this interview process, and for good measure. C3.ai clearly wants the right people, not so much culture or work ethic, but intellect. Also, it is very clear that c3.ai currently only works on preventative maintenace problems, and have not expanded into other areas of the military. I also don't believe it will happen any time soon because they want to focus on platform adoption and not delivering AI en route to other platforms. They only discussed the Pentagon's F-35, HH-60 maintenance, then fraud detection in HHS, and IRS.
