The application and interview process is extremely extensive and time consuming for a candidate. My experience for this position was:
1. Respond to job opening by submitting a CV, cover letter and a response to 3 questions. This overall required about 1 hour of effort.
2. Received a message that I progressed to the next round within a few days, which was responding in writing to 37 (!) questions. Was asked in addition to do a psychometric assessment. Responding to the questions resulted in a 24 page PDF that, taking into account writing and multiple reviews. Combined with the psychometric test this step overall took about 40 hours.
3. Received a message within a few days that I again progressed to the first interview round, consisting of 3 interviews that all happened within 1 week. The interviews including preparation and research overall took about 9 hours.
4. Received a message within hours after the last interview that I again progressed, this time to the HR interview. I was also asked to complete another psychometric assessment. This interview covered career choices, availability, location and salary expectations.
I was told I was one of only a few people progressing to this stage and that HR would recommend to progress me to the next round, which would be last round interviews with executives. The HR interview including preparation and the psychometric assessment took about 3 hours.
5. Suddenly hear nothing from Canonical for a week. Reached out to HR to ask for a copy of my psychometric assessments (that were promised to be send to me during the HR interview) and a status update. Receive the reports but no status update, "the hiring manager will be in touch soon".
Reached out to the hiring manager after 10 or so days for an update, only to receive a rejection for the role via an automated email from the HR system roughly a day later. At this point I've invested over 50 hours in this application, something I have never done for any other role in my extensive career. I therefore reached out to the hiring manager to receive actual feedback about why I'm not progressing but never received an answer.
I'm well aware that progressing relatively far in an interview process is no guarantee for success. Perhaps there was a better candidate, something about my history, my salary expectations, something within Canonical that changed or something else entirely. All potentially valid and acceptable reasons.
What is disappointing however is that I was effectively ghosted by Canonical and the hiring manager after the HR interview. Instead of receiving the usual update within days or even hours I didn't hear anything for 10 days and had to follow up myself, only to be rejected through an automated email. I did expect better communication and more respect from Canonical for a candidate, especially if he/she made it that far in the process and invested that much time and effort really.
Personal learnings
- There's really a limit to the amount of time you should spend on applying for a role. I certainly liked the role and the idea of working for Canonical, but I did spend way too much time.
- Get clear salary indications early in the process. I don't know if that was an issue in my case, but I was told by HR that the hiring manager decides what to offer and would have to sign it off with the CFO before formally offering it. I recommend to reach out to the hiring manager early in the process to get clarity and potentially save yourself lots of hours.
