I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One in Jan 2017
Interview
I was contacted by a recruiter to apply for a Data Scientist position. The experience with the recruiter was very pleasant. Like many other reviews have mentioned, Capital One has a four phase interview process, which are (1) HackerRank quiz; (2) Technical phone interview; (3) Independent data problem; and (4) On-site interview.
I'm not a formally trained computer scientist (EE background), but I found the HackerRank quiz to be pretty straightforward. I was contacted shortly after completing the quiz to schedule a phone interview.
For the phone interview, I spoke with a data scientist at an office that would be different from the one I was being interviewed for. I was asked an ill-defined question about how to develop a model for predicting credit card fraud, given a vague set of feature data. Ultimately, I don't think the interviewer liked my approach, as I received notification from the recruiter about one week later that the hiring manager was not interested in proceeding.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
How would you develop a model to predict credit card fraud?
How would you handle missing or garbage data?
How would you use existing features to add new features?
Only gone through the initial HR interview process so far. Waiting to go through OA and power day. Applied mid June. Got an answer end of June/ early July. Seemed like just a screening of the resume so far. Nothing substantial yet.
I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Capital One (Dallas, TX) in Jan 2026
