The interview process was OK and somewhat deceitful. The recruiter was friendly and personable, however, it appears that CarGurus is looking to hire the person who they can pay the least to without consideration of experience and/or skill set. The recruiter sold me on the job & the company to the point where we discussed potential salary and were seeing eye to eye but he stated he needed to go back to the director to get the final blessing on whether he would make me an official offer in the range where we had discussed. It was deceitful because he had told me to expect XYZ amount (and it seemed like he had previously discussed this with the decision maker) and when it seemed like we had almost closed the deal, he emailed me to let me know they were going to further interview as the person they were interviewing would fit their planned salary range. After having finished the interview of the new prospect, he advised he expressed his continued interested in hiring me despite my compensation demand being a little bit over the usual. Today I received an email stating they will continue their search because they don't want to change the dynamic of the team by paying me more. In the future, I would suggest refraining from discussing compensation until the company is sure they can actually pay that much. It is a distasteful for the person on the other side of the deal.
