      Sales Consultant Interview

      Jan 8, 2016
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Woodbridge, VA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at CarMax (Woodbridge, VA) in Jan 2016

      Interview

I had read other reviews from this site and knew how this process was going to be going into it. My resume was posted on an internet job search website and the manager of the Woodbridge location reached out to me three times before I finally bit the bullet and applied. I normally would never go for a sales position because while I love working with people, I'm not at all a schmoozer or pushy. Anyways, I do the phone interview and they asked a series of questions that delve into my employment history. Took about 15 minutes and then I was asked to come in the next afternoon for an interview. I get to the location and the first thing I am greeted with is a sales consultant that took one look at me and told me that my outfit didn't fit what I was applying for. I believe the words she greeted me with were, "Oh no, hunny!" 1. She didn't even know what job I was coming in to interview for, she just felt the need to be abrasive, I guess. 2. I was dressed business professional in a very nice dress and a cardigan because I have been going to a plethora of interviews and this is typically what they asked for. She then asked if I had time to go home and change, which I did not because I always arrive 5 minutes before my interview time. Anyways, after that debacle I was told to sit at one of the empty sales desks. I waited about 20 minutes and then was greeted by a woman named Tracie, whom I am guessing is one of the hiring supervisors since she has also set up the interview with me. She lead me to a computer and had me fill out a background check, where they had me enter my social security number and answer a few questions. Tracie is a very nice woman and treated me very well so kudos to her! After I did the check I had to wait another 20-25 minutes and then was greeted by another supervisor who asked me some questions about what I had submitted on my background information. I answered honestly and concisely and then I waited another 15 minutes after that to speak to another manager named Chris. He went through some of the typical STAR questions as well as asking me what types of questions I would ask when someone is interested in buying a vehicle. Once he was done he began with, "So we are interviewing a lot of other candidates so we will reac...." That is when I knew I was not going to get an offer based on the other reviews submitted before me. Anyways, my quip with this location is that their staff is rude for the most part (there were other staff members that were unprofessional in their manner and dress). I couldn't understand why a company would email a potential candidate three times to later decline an offer. Even my mother applied there, who worked for CarMax years ago and was a president's club member and even she was declined an offer. Overall, I had an negative experience and I am not sure what this company was really looking for.

      Interview

I had a disappointing experience with interview process. After submitting an online application, I was contacted by a hiring manager/recruiter who scheduled a 20-minute phone interview for a specific date and time. Unfortunately, no one called at the agreed-upon time, and I did not receive any communication explaining the missed interview or offering to reschedule. A few days later, I received an automated rejection email. The lack of communication and professionalism throughout the process was frustrating. If a company chooses to move forward or not move forward with a candidate, at least a basic courtesy and timely communication is expected.

      Interview

About a 15-20 minute phone interview. Basic questions like past job experience, are you comfortable with customer service? If they like you, you move on to an in person interview. A scripted interview with one of the sales managers asking open ended questions on why you would be a good candidate, if you have sales experience, & that you understand it is a 100% commission position. You will then complete a sales exercise on the lot, where you complete a brief walkaround of a vehicle & present some obvious features & benefits of the vehicle. If you get passed that, you meet the General Manager where he/she will be the final decision. He asked repetitive questions the sales managers did & then asked specific questions like "Describe a time you sold a product, what was the determining factor that resulted in the customer buying that product?"
