      BI/Reports Developer Interview

      May 13, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Greenwood Village, CO
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Century Communities (Greenwood Village, CO) in Apr 2017

      Interview

I first had a 30-minute phone interview with an HR person that went very well, which was followed up later in the week with a one-on-one final interview with two individuals in the IT group. It was my understanding at the time that the company has been looking for months to find a person with the right skills. This seemed rather odd given that Denver is an IT down with many people having these skills sought. Within seconds of meeting the person running the final interview, I instantly understood the reason. The individual behaved smugly and when I shook their hand it was like a very limp noodle, as though they did not wish to be touched. Once the interview began they confused almost all of the IT terminology and spoke softly with a thick accent. As a consequence my responses required three times longer than necessary because I had to first determine what they were talking about before providing the answer. In several cases they asked entirely fictitious questions for which there were no correct answers. The individual professed to have very strong experience in business intelligence but their questions proved otherwise. They expressed a strong understanding of SSIS, but then asked me a very strange set of ETL questions that I was able to answer. The reason for this is that they were trying to figure out something very basic for a current project and wanted my input. It was frustrating because, while I had far more experience in business intelligence than the interviewers, I was not hired because I could not provide fictitious answers to questions based on fictional concepts. Nevertheless, I regard not working at Century Communities with these individuals to be a blessing in disguise.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How do you "link" datasets in SSRS? They then hinted that It is done just like that in PowerBI and Tableau.
