The initial conversation with the long tenured peer on the Recruitment team was fantastic - she was highly informative, transparent, and genuine about her excitement for the company and its mission. We discussed a number of areas of opportunity that would be valuable to the team in 2024, and I was excited to continue exploring the opportunity.
The second conversation with the head of the team was a shocking 180 - I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt that she had only been employed there for <3 months and would not be as intimately familiar with the environment and operations, however their answers to basic questions around strategy and the day-to-day (recruiting capacity, hiring partnerships, recruiting processes, etc.) were MAJOR red flags. The conversation solely focused on "hiring, hiring, hiring", KPIs, and working autonomously. The hiring numbers they provided, in the context of a ~30 person Recruiting org, made zero sense, and individual recruiter KPI's were similarly unrealistic. It was clear that the only thing that mattered was filling seats as quickly as possible, despite the constant reassurance that eliminating bias and using data to maintain a high caliber of talent were at the top of their priorities.
Also worth mentioning - you were expected to complete a 1-2 hour IQ/Logic Puzzle Test (Raven's Adaptive Exam) that in no way, shape, or form was related to the role or responsibilities of a recruiter. How does pattern recognition help you assess the way that a recruiter functions in their work? It doesn't.
