I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Checkr in Oct 2021
Interview
Phone screen. Then the first round coding problem is a string matching exercise having to do with matching names. The problem can be found online.
The final round is quite involved and a lot of work, and very much to ask for especially for a junior (<2 years of experience) engineer. It is four 1 hour interviews described as follows, in no particular order.
1. An object oriented design problem where you are given some existing code and need to implement additional features using the best data structure/object oriented design you can think of.
2. Code refactoring, fairly straightforward description.
3. System architecture- they will ask you to design Checkr's product, and at the end will go over how your solution is different from the actual product, improvements, tradeoffs, etc.
4. Build an API with a framework/coding language of your choice. You will need to set up boilerplate code ahead of time.
I was scheduled for the onsite but withdrew because I had another offer, and I thought that prep, especially for the API design, was too much. Before each interview, a recruiter called and walked me through what to expect. They even walked me through the rubric of each onsite interview. This might be nice for more experienced people, but it gave me a feeling that there was no way a junior could meet the expectations set forth by their rubric. I also felt there was pressure that "you must perform almost perfectly because we told you what you will be asked".
TLDR: This interview process would be good for senior people that have a lot of experience with system design and can build a REST API in less than a hour. There were no leetcode style questions. But I feel like for less experienced devs, the expectations and requirements are very high.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
String matching exercise- someone else has posted the exact problem in another review.
Object Oriented Design
Build REST API
System Design (Architecture of Checkr's product)
Code Refactoring
The interview process starts with a HR screen, before proceeding to a first round code screen.
The exercise wasn’t terribly difficult, but you are on a time crunch. My interviewer was nice, but I feel like towards the end they led me down the wrong path. I just really don’t like these live coding interviews where you have to get the question right and you’re tested on “collaboration.” Can you even truly test collaboration, when the interviewer already knows the answer?
In the end I feel like I was close, but stumbled due to anxiety about wanting to make it to the next round. I recommend just relaxing and hopefully you are good at solving problems while someone stares at you and maybe gives not so helpful hints. It’s also telling that probably most of the ppl who here probably got the same question, yet rejected after the first round 🤔 I doubt it is due to true incompetence.
I applied online. I interviewed at Checkr (San Francisco, CA) in Sep 2025
Interview
Spoke with recruiter about prior experience and potential alignment with the role. Went over current products of the company, day to day expectations for the role, and logistics. Was then given a link for an online assessment.

Question 1
Code Assessment mimicking potential business logic within the API layer. Code must pass test cases (not all known). Done in hacker rank IDE. Given about one hour to do it.
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Checkr (Denver, CO) in Jul 2025
Interview
After applying, a Checkr recruiter reached out with the preliminary name matching code challenge described in detail in other posts. This was followed by a 30-minute recruiter phone screen. There was then a pretty exhaustive set of technical challenges: 1) object oriented design diagram for a new checkr feature 2) an api dev exercise 3) a core refactoring challenge. They were all straightforward and you’re given details for each challenge in advance. The process wrapped up with a conversation with the hiring manager. Overall, the interviews were fair and reflective of actual software engineering work
